LAHORE: The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has intensified emergency measures across the province to tackle the ongoing heatwave following directions from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
According to the PDMA, climate change is expected to increase the intensity of heatwaves during July, with the districts of Thal, Cholistan and South Punjab likely to be the worst affected.
A PDMA spokesperson said heatwave camps have been established in vulnerable districts, while hospitals have been instructed to ensure the availability of heatwave counters, essential medicines, ORS, clean drinking water and medical staff.
Relief camps have also been set up in urban areas, where clean drinking water, filtration facilities, water bowls and first aid services are being provided. Mobile health teams will remain on standby to provide immediate treatment to patients suffering from heatstroke and dehydration.
The spokesperson said 24-hour control rooms are fully operational to monitor the situation and issue timely public advisories, while district control rooms across Punjab have been placed on high alert to ensure a swift emergency response.
The PDMA added that the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Rescue 1122, Livestock Department, Local Government Department and district administrations are maintaining close coordination and continuously monitoring weather conditions.
Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., stay well hydrated, protect themselves from direct sunlight and seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms of heatstroke.
