Workshop in Peshawar trains journalists on climate reporting and green skills

PESHAWAR: Journalists from different media organisations attended a one-day training workshop in Peshawar on Saturday aimed at improving climate reporting skills and strengthening understanding of environmental issues and climate communication.

The workshop, organised by the Institute for Research, Advocacy and Development and the Sustainable Development Policy Institute, focused on climate mitigation, adaptation and the role of media in raising public awareness about climate change.

Experts from the University of Peshawar, including Dr Asif Khan and Dr Faizullah Jan, led sessions on climate science, environmental governance and investigative climate journalism.

Participants discussed topics including greenhouse gas emissions, global warming and the human impact on environmental degradation. Trainers also highlighted global climate agreements, sustainable development goals and Pakistan’s environmental governance framework.

Focus on climate communication and misinformation

The workshop included practical sessions on climate communication, data-driven journalism and countering misinformation related to environmental reporting.

Trainers encouraged journalists to use credible sources and evidence-based reporting methods while covering climate-related stories and environmental challenges.

A separate session focused on investigative climate reporting, including techniques for reporting on climate impacts, adaptation measures and successful examples of climate journalism.

Speaking during the workshop, Dr Asif Khan said journalists play an important role in shaping public understanding of climate issues, while Dr Faizullah Jan stressed the need for accurate and research-based reporting on environmental challenges.

The event concluded with a reflection session in which participants shared key lessons and discussed ways to strengthen climate journalism in their respective news organisations.
