Ethiopian Embassy Celebrates 20th Nations, Nationalities & Peoples’ Day

The Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad marked the 20th Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Day with a ceremony attended by members of the Ethiopian community in Pakistan, media representatives, tour operators and guests. The annual observance highlights Ethiopia’s constitutional principles of cultural recognition and equal rights.

Ethiopian Embassy outlines significance of the national day

Speaking at the event organized by Ethiopian Embassy, Mr. Chalachew Eshetie, Chargé d’Affaires (a.i.), explained that the day is commemorated every year on December 8 to mark the ratification of the 1994 Constitution. He said the constitution guarantees recognition, equality and protection for all cultures and communities within Ethiopia.

Mr. Eshetie also referred to national developments, noting progress in infrastructure, ongoing reforms across various sectors, and recent milestones including the completion and inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). He stated that these achievements reflect broader economic efforts underway in Ethiopia.

Pakistan underscores bilateral ties during the ceremony

H.E. Farah Naz Akbar, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministries of National Heritage & Culture and Education & Professional Training, attended as the chief guest. She conveyed greetings on behalf of the Government of Pakistan and acknowledged areas of shared cultural and demographic characteristics between the two countries.

She reaffirmed Pakistan’s intention to strengthen cooperation with Ethiopia under the “Look Africa” and “Engage Africa” policy frameworks. She also noted Ethiopia’s recent economic progress.

Diplomatic community, guests attend the celebration

Participants from the Ethiopian community, partner organisations and local stakeholders in Pakistan took part in the ceremony, which included cultural elements and exchanges highlighting Ethiopia’s diversity.
