YouTube introduces new revenue model for short videos

YouTube has unveiled a new way for creators to monetize their content, paralleling TikTok’s model of generating revenue for short videos.

To cater to creators who specialize in short-form content similar to TikTok, YouTube is rolling out a new feature that offers earning opportunities.

This new feature allows creators to restrict access to their videos exclusively to paying subscribers, providing an additional source of revenue.

Creators can use this option to offer their subscribers exclusive content, boost engagement, and drive subscriptions.

With the ability to curate both pre-published and uploaded short videos, creators can curate niche content for their subscriber base.

The rollout of the feature mirrors that of the TikTok series, which debuted in March 2023. The feature allows qualified users to compile their videos into an album that can be accessed by viewers for a fee.

Referred to as a “serial album,” creators have autonomy over the price, which ranges from $1 to $190 per album view. Notably, TikTok does not claim a share of revenue from series albums, but users must pay a fee to participate in the series program.

YouTube’s announcement comes amid staggering viewership statistics, with its short videos getting a staggering 70 billion views a day. In addition, a quarter of the channels in the YouTube partner program take advantage of the monetization potential of short films.

The move underscores YouTube’s commitment to supporting a vibrant ecosystem of creators and capitalizing on the growing popularity of short-form video content.
