ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Shahbaz Sharif has been elected as the 24th Prime Minister of Pakistan.
The much-anticipated election for the post of Prime Minister witnessed a head-to-head battle between Shahbaz Sharif and Omar Ayub of the Pakistan Sunni Congress-allied Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The threshold for victory was set at 169 votes, with the National Assembly having 336 members. Shahbaz Sharif got 201 votes while Omar Ayub got 92 votes.
The National Assembly convened at noon, albeit an hour late, under the leadership of Speaker Ayaz Sadiq. However, the meeting was not without its fair share of drama. As the session began, members of the Sunni Ittehad Council staged protests and chanted in front of the lectern, while PML-N representatives rallied behind slogans of “Ghari Chor”.

The voting process evolved by assigning members to specific lobbies corresponding to their preferred candidate. Supporters of Shahbaz Sharif gathered in Hall ‘A’ while supporters of Omar Ayub gathered in Hall ‘B’.
Shahbaz Sharif’s ascension to the office of Prime Minister marks a significant moment in Pakistan’s political scene, with high expectations for his tenure at the helm.
