Govt bans laying of red carpet at events

The federal government has banned the use of the red carpet at official events across the country, a move aimed at promoting simplicity and economy.

The decision taken by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif underscores the commitment to eliminate extravagant practices and prioritize efficiency in government proceedings.

The ban also extends to the use of the red carpet for visits by ministers and government officials, signaling a departure from traditional pomp and ceremony. According to a notification issued by the government, the use of the red carpet will be limited to protocol purposes only at diplomatic events.

An angry Prime Minister Sharif, who took stern notice, personally imposed the ban, stressing the need for government functions to reflect modesty and practicality. The directive specifically states that there will be no red-carpet receptions at any event, except for diplomatic engagements.

“There will be no red carpet reception at any event, except for diplomats,” the announcement said.

Furthermore, the ban is not limited to federal posts as it also applies to chief ministers and ministers at all levels of government.

The decision comes in response to Prime Minister Sharif’s sharp observation on the use of the red carpet with a determination to curb unnecessary extravagance.

Under the new guidelines, red carpets and receptions will no longer be allowed at official functions, in line with the government’s wider agenda to promote accountability and responsible governance. Instead, red carpet receptions will be reserved exclusively for arriving foreign guests, with diplomatic protocol being followed.
