Youth across Pakistan joins Transform Pakistan campaign

Under the banner of the Transform Pakistan campaign, which calls for the regulation of industrially produced trans-fatty acids (iTFAs), the Pakistan Youth Change Advocates (PYCA) has launched a statewide coalition of youth organizations. In order to guarantee a safer and better eating environment for all Pakistanis, this endeavor is a critical first step.

According to Huma Jehangir, PYCA’s Program Implementation lead, “the Transform Pakistan campaign, launched last year, has gained momentum as PYCA engages with youth groups across diverse regions, fostering awareness about the adverse health effects of iTFAs.”

“From Karachi to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, young leaders are now equipped with knowledge and advocacy skills, actively leading the campaign in their localities,” she stated.

A vibrant student organization at the University of Karachi is conducting research on the iTFA content of the most popular products consumed on campus in Karachi. According to a PYCA press release, Parkash Meghwar said, “Our initiative not only sheds light on the immediate environment but also contributes valuable insights to the broader discourse on regulating trans fats.”

Concurrently, a University of Agriculture Faisalabad student organization from NIFSAT is advancing through collaboration with the Punjab Food Authority (PFA), school administration, and parents. Introducing her work with her young colleagues in Faisalabad, Nagina Mehboob remarked, “Our collaboration ensures that communities actively voice their support for regulation, emphasizing the fundamental right to a healthier food environment.”

In the meantime, a University of Peshawar youth group is bringing together students from other colleges in an effort to raise the need for regulatory support. University of Peshawar delegate Shahid Ali Khan highlighted the importance of youth in changing policies, adding, “We believe that students have the power to drive change.” Our efforts are concentrated on creating a unified front in order to pursue regulatory changes that safeguard our future and well-being.”

PYCA launched a national petition as part of the initiative, garnering broad support for swift regulatory action against iTFAs. The nation’s health and welfare are the top priorities, and the petition that has gathered a lot of signatures will be given to the right authorities.
