A 57-year-old woman suffering from a specific respiratory disease (COPD) has undergone the world’s first fully robotic double lung transplant.
The successful surgery was led by Dr. Stephanie Chang at New York University in October. Just a month earlier, Dr. Chang had performed the country’s first fully robotic single lung transplant.
Dr. Ralph Mosca, head of Cardiothoracic Surgery at New York University School of Medicine, stated that this latest innovation marks a revolutionary moment in lung transplant surgery worldwide and ushers in a new era in patient care.
After months of careful evaluation, patient Cheryl Mehrkar was placed on the transplant recipient list, and just four days later, she received the double lung transplant.
