Wildlife Department Rescues 2,500 Wild Birds in Lahore Raid, Three Suspects Arrested

LAHORE: The Punjab Wildlife Department has recovered approximately 2,500 wild birds and apprehended three suspects during a raid against illegal bird trapping in the riverine area near Khataar Road, Tehsil Raiwind.

According to a field activity report dated October 8, 2026, the operation was conducted after the department received credible information from a whistleblower.

Senior Wildlife Ranger Azhar Bhatti led the raid alongside wildlife staff members Arif Samuel, Asad Ali, Ammar Ali, Nadeem and Ghulam Ali. The operation was carried out under the supervision of the Deputy Chief Wildlife Ranger Lahore and Assistant Chief Wildlife Ranger Jallo.

The team reportedly caught three individuals while they were illegally trapping wild birds with nets.

During the operation, officials seized approximately 2,500 wild birds, three motorcycles and two net setups with bamboo poles. The recovered items were taken into custody as evidence.

The department initiated legal proceedings, and First Information Report (FIR) No. 3728/26 was registered at Hanjarwal Police Station in Lahore. The three suspects were taken into custody.

Illegal trapping and trade can threaten wild bird populations and disrupt ecosystems. Birds play an important role in maintaining ecological balance, including insect control, seed dispersal and other natural processes.

The operation highlights the importance of wildlife law enforcement and public cooperation in preventing illegal hunting and protecting biodiversity. The department’s action also demonstrates the role whistleblowers and citizens can play in reporting activities that threaten wildlife.
