California: Instant messaging application WhatsApp has hinted at introducing advertisements on the platform.
The company has made it clear that these ads may not be introduced in the inbox but possibly in the WhatsApp status box.
WhatsApp has long resisted introducing ads and this differentiates it from other meta platforms like Instagram and Facebook that feature heavy ads.
WhatsApp has been rumored for more than five years to introduce ads on the platform, but the main reason for not doing so is citing threats to users’ privacy.
A report in September suggested that the company was evaluating whether showing ads in chat lists could be effective.
However, claims of Meta testing or planning such a feature in the future have been flatly denied.
However, in an interview given to a newspaper, WhatsApp chief Will Cathcart, when asked about this, said that possibly some ads could be served in other parts of the platform.
