Smartphone messaging app WhatsApp, owned by Meta Platforms, is back online on Wednesday after an eight-hour outage that affected thousands of users around the world.
WhatsApp reported the problem to social media site X.
According to Downdetector, the outage affected 24,000 WhatsApp users in the US. More than 5,000 Instagram users were also reportedly hacked.
About 1,000 people in the US are experiencing problems with Instagram, according to Downdetector, a website that tracks outages by compiling status reports from various sources, including errors sent by users on the platform.
According to Downdetector, the WhatsApp outage affected thousands of users in Brazil, the UK, and India.
Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
A technical fault left hundreds of thousands of users of the social media company’s Facebook and Instagram sites without power for more than two hours around the world last month.
With themes included in the family of applications, Meta has 3.19 billion daily active users.
