FAISALABAD: The University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) have explored new opportunities to strengthen collaborative agricultural research aimed at addressing Pakistan’s emerging food, water and climate challenges.
ACIAR Pakistan Country Manager Munawar Raza Kazmi and international expert Dr Leigh Vial visited UAF, where they held discussions with Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zulfiqar Ali, faculty members and researchers.
The discussions focused on several priority areas, including hybrid wheat, climate-resilient agriculture, water management and citrus value chains.
The proposed areas of collaboration are aimed at improving agricultural productivity while strengthening value chains and helping farming communities adapt to the growing impacts of climate change.
Climate-resilient agriculture is becoming increasingly important for Pakistan as farmers face rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, water scarcity and increasingly frequent extreme weather events. Research into crop varieties, efficient water management and resilient agricultural systems could help reduce these risks and strengthen food security.
The discussions also highlighted the importance of developing stronger agricultural value chains, particularly in areas such as citrus production, to improve market opportunities and increase returns for farmers.
The visit reaffirmed the longstanding partnership between UAF and ACIAR and underscored the importance of demand-driven, research-based solutions to address the evolving challenges confronting Pakistan’s agriculture sector.
Strengthening cooperation between research institutions and international agricultural organisations could help translate scientific research into practical solutions for farmers while supporting a more productive, sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural sector in Pakistan.
