Tokyo Hosts Unique Sleep Competition With Prize Money Exceeding ,000

TOKYO, October 7, 2026 — A unique sleep competition in Tokyo has attracted attention for turning a good night’s rest into a competitive event, with the winner eligible for a prize worth more than two million Japanese yen, or approximately $14,000.

The competition, called the “Mattress Race,” was organised to raise awareness about the importance of quality sleep amid concerns over sleep deprivation in Japan, where demanding work schedules and busy lifestyles can limit the time people spend resting.

According to a report by Hum News, dozens of participants took part in the event, where they were given comfortable mattresses and up to 90 minutes to sleep.

Sleep Quality Determines the Winner

Unlike conventional competitions, the event did not reward participants simply for sleeping the longest. Judges assessed how quickly participants fell asleep and the depth and quality of their rest.

Special monitoring equipment was used to evaluate participants’ sleep patterns and help determine the winner. Some competitors even brought soft toys to make themselves more comfortable during the unusual contest.

The organisers aimed to create a relaxed environment in which participants could demonstrate their ability to achieve restful sleep.

Raising Awareness About Sleep Deprivation

The event was organised by Koala Sleep Japan. The company’s creative director, Rechiro Nakama, said the competition was intended not only as entertainment but also as a way to highlight the importance of healthy sleep habits.

Work commitments, travel and late-night activities are among the factors that can affect sleeping patterns in Japan.

According to 2021 data cited by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), people in Japan slept an average of seven hours and 24 minutes per day, the lowest average among OECD member countries at the time.

The Tokyo competition sought to draw public attention to the value of adequate rest through an unconventional format that combined entertainment with a health awareness message.

By rewarding participants for achieving quality sleep, the event offered a creative reminder that rest is an important part of a healthy lifestyle.
