The Solution to Pakistan’s Water Crisis Lies in Better Planning

The flow of water in Kotri Barrage and other reservoirs highlights that the solution to Pakistan’s water crisis is hidden in improved planning.
According to sources, on August 9, 2025, the water flow at Kotri Barrage reached a peak of 171,846 cusecs.

By August 18, 2025, the flow had decreased to 71,227 cusecs, which is still several times higher than the minimum required level, sources say.
Currently, the water being released from Kotri Barrage far exceeds the minimum required limit of 5,000 cusecs, according to sources.

If proper storage facilities and canal systems were in place, water could be stored to meet the year-round needs of Sindh and southern Punjab, sources add.

The current flow indicates that resources are available; what is needed is better planning and infrastructure, sources say.

Data shows that Pakistan does not face a shortage of water, but rather a lack of systems to store and manage it effectively, according to sources.
