An elderly Italian man, known as “Robinson Crusoe” for spending 32 years alone on an island, has passed away after recently returning to society.
Robinson, whose real name was Morando, lived on the island of Budelli, located far from the Italian island of Sardinia, where he had become known for his self-sufficiency skills. He had been living on the island since 1989 after a boating accident during a trip to Polynesia.
For three decades, Robinson took care of the island’s environment, cleaned the beaches, and briefed visitors who came to enjoy the island’s ecosystem. He was the island’s primary caretaker and occasionally received supplies for his needs. He had even set up a solar power system and kept his home warm using a simple stove.
However, when the authorities of the La Maddalena National Park decided to turn the island into an environmental education center, Robinson was forced to leave after a prolonged dispute. He was relocated to a local one-bedroom apartment.
After his health began to deteriorate, he spent some time in a care home in Sassari city last summer, before moving to his hometown of Modena, where he passed away.
