World number five Jessica Pegula announced her withdrawal from the French Open on Thursday, saying her injury had not fully recovered.
The 30-year-old American shared the news on Instagram, writing, “Unfortunately, I’m out of @rolandgarros this year. I’m back to normal (I haven’t had any problems for a few weeks) but I’ve been playing very safe and recovery and if I had 5-7 more days I’ll be 100% the same. “I’ll be there.”
Pegula has not competed in an official tournament since mid-April during the Billy King Cup. He then withdrew from the Madrid Open due to an unexplained injury and missed the Rome Open, the last clay court event before Roland Garros. Despite these challenges, Pegula is optimistic about getting back on the road.
“I will definitely be back for the grass season and the rest of the summer,” he assured his followers. Pegula, a quarter-finalist at Roland Garros in 2022, is looking to make a comeback after losing this year’s tournament, where she was eliminated in the third round last year by Belgium’s Elise Mertens.
The French Open will be held late on Thursday, with the tournament starting this weekend.
