The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently recognized tea as a healthy food item. This historic decision affirms the claims made by the global tea industry that tea offers health benefits.
The decision specifically acknowledges that tea made from the Camellia sinensis plant is a healthful beverage. Several organizations involved in the production and global marketing of tea have welcomed this move.
Peter F. Goggi, President of the U.S. Tea Association, called the decision “great news” for the global tea industry, emphasizing that it will promote tea as a healthful drink and have a positive impact on the market.
Similarly, Bidyananda Barkakoty, advisor to the North Eastern Tea Association (NETA) and former Vice Chairman of the Tea Board of India, expressed his enthusiasm for the FDA’s decision, noting that global research highlights the health benefits of tea. He urged the Indian government to promote tea as a healthy beverage.
