New Zealand won the 26th match of the ICC T20 World Cup and chose to face the West Indies first. West Indies scored 149 for 9 in the 20 overs provided.
West Indies got off to a disappointing start at the Brian Lara Stadium, with the first five batsmen dismissed for just 30 runs. Brandon King 9, Johnson Charles 0, Nicholas Pooran 17, Roston Chase 0, captain Rowman Powell scored only 1 goal.
Sherfane Rutherford led an outstanding bowling performance from the Kiwi bowlers with a brilliant knock of 68. Akil Hussain added 15, Andre Russell 14, Alzarri Joseph added 6 wickets.
Trent Boult took 3 wickets for New Zealand, while Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson took 2 wickets each. James Nesham and Mitchell Santner scored 1 each.
The New Zealand team lost 9 wickets in the required 20 overs and scored only 136 runs. Opener Glenn Phillips scored 40 off 33 balls, Finn Allen added 26 and Mitchell Santner scored 21.
Alzarri Joseph of West Indies scored 19 runs in 4 overs and took 4 wickets, Gudakesh Motie conceded 25 runs in 4 overs and sent 3 players to the pavilion, while Akil Hussain scored 21 runs.
This is New Zealand’s second match and West Indies’ third in Group C of the mega event.
