MUZAFFARGARH: Muzaffargarh is diversifying beyond its traditional wheat and cotton crops by promoting modern grape cultivation, with district authorities launching a pilot project aimed at increasing farmers’ incomes through high-value horticulture.
According to the district administration, the initiative is being implemented in line with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s vision for agricultural development and crop diversification.
Deputy Commissioner Usman Tahir Jappa visited a modern grape orchard in Union Council Taleri, where he reviewed grape grading, packaging and advanced cultivation practices. During the visit, he discussed production, marketing opportunities and modern farming techniques with the orchard owner.
The deputy commissioner announced that the district administration has officially launched a pilot grape farming project in Muzaffargarh and expressed confidence that the initiative would pave the way for large-scale commercial grape cultivation in the district.
He noted that local farmers already possess extensive experience in managing mango orchards, adding that grape cultivation also requires careful orchard management, making it a suitable and promising crop for the region.
Usman Tahir Jappa said the district administration plans to organize specialized training programmes to equip farmers with modern grape cultivation techniques and best agricultural practices.
Officials from the Agriculture Department said grapes produced in South Punjab reach markets earlier than those from many other regions, enabling growers to secure higher prices and better profits.
Local grape growers said the crop offers an estimated profit of Rs1.6 million to Rs1.8 million per acre, with relatively low production costs, making grape farming an attractive and profitable alternative for farmers seeking to diversify their agricultural operations.
