Wanindu Hasaranga will lead Sri Lanka’s experienced outfit for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
Hasaranga, who was named Sri Lanka’s T20I captain last December, will lead the team in 2024 at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA. Charit Asalanka, the middle class, was appointed as his deputy.
Sri Lanka relied on the experience of veteran Angelo Mathews, who returned to the T20I setup in January earlier this year after an absence of nearly three years. It will be Matthews’ sixth T20 World Cup as he was part of Sri Lanka’s winning campaign in 2014.
Sri Lanka Team: Wanindu Hasaranga (c), Charit Asalanka (wc), Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, Kamindu Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Angelo Mathews, Dasun Shanaka, Dhananjaya De Silva, Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage, Dushmantha Chame Matheesha Pathirana and Dilshan Madushanka
The Sri Lankan squad will have plenty of leadership experience, with former limited-overs batsman Dasun Shanaka also in the mix along with Kusal Mendis (current ODI captain) and Dhananjaya de Silva (current Test captain).
Emphasizing balance, Sri Lanka opted for versatile options in their group. Mathews and Shanaka are the two reliable pacers in the team.
Matheesha Pathirana and Nuwan Thushara brought the X-factor to Sri Lanka’s pace attack, led by Dushmantha Chameera and Dilshan Madhushanka, with a bowling action reminiscent of Lasith Malinga.
Sri Lanka entered Group D along with South Africa, Bangladesh, Netherlands and Nepal.
Teams must make changes to their squad by May 25, after which any changes will require the approval of the ICC’s Technical Committee.
