London – Irish singer Sinead O’Connor died last year of “natural causes”, the London coroner announced on Tuesday.
The Grammy-winning singer, best known for her 1990 cover of “Nothing Compares 2 U,” was found unresponsive at her south London home last July. She was 56.
London Police said at the time that officers were not treating it as suspicious as an autopsy had been carried out to determine the cause of her death.
A brief statement from Southwark Coroner’s Court in south London said: “This is to confirm that Mrs O’Connor died of natural causes. The coroner has therefore withdrawn her involvement in her death.”
O’Connor’s death prompted an outpouring of sympathy from her legions of fans including other musicians and celebrities around the world, particularly in her homeland of Ireland.
Hundreds of people lined her procession route in Bray, the Irish town 20 kilometers south of Dublin she called home for 15 years, on the day of her funeral last August.
The willingness of the musician, who achieved international fame in the 1990s, to criticize the Catholic Church in particular, was vilified by some and praised as a pioneer by others.
O’Connor’s agents revealed that she was completing a new album and planning a tour as well as a film based on her autobiography, “Rememberings,” before her death.
The musician has also spoken publicly about his mental health, telling US TV host Oprah Winfrey in 2007 that he had struggled with suicidal thoughts and had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
She has avoided the limelight recently, especially after the suicide of her son Shane in 2022 at the age of 17.
