SINDH: Efforts are under way to strengthen groundwater management and improve water governance to support climate-resilient agriculture in Sindh.
Mr. Nazir Ahmed Memon, Project Coordinator, SWAT, met with senior water resources experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the ADU-SWAT team to discuss groundwater management under the GCF TIBCRAWM Project.
The meeting also reviewed the recently completed Aquifer Management Plan for the Khipro Canal command area. The plan is aimed at improving understanding and management of groundwater resources in an important agricultural area.
Participants discussed the possibility of expanding the groundwater management approach to other areas of Sindh through a provincial public sector programme.
The FAO team was advised to prepare a Concept Note and Development Proposal in coordination with the Irrigation and Agriculture Departments of Sindh.
Better management of groundwater can help protect water resources, support farmers and strengthen agricultural resilience as climate change increases pressure on water availability.
The initiative highlights the importance of science-based water governance for sustainable agriculture and long-term climate resilience in Sindh.
