The iconic pair of shoes worn by Judy Garland in the famous Hollywood film The Wizard of Oz has been put up for auction nearly two decades after they were stolen.
According to an announcement by Heritage Auctions in Dallas, online bidding for the shoes has already begun and will continue until December 7.
The auction house acquired the shoes from Michael Shaw, a collector of rare items, who had originally obtained them from the 1939 musical film. In 2005, Michael donated the shoes to the Judy Garland Museum in Minnesota, where they were stolen by an individual who broke into the display case. The FBI recovered the shoes in 2018.
The thieves had mistakenly believed the shoes were adorned with real jewels.
Now, the museum is auctioning the shoes, which are one of several pairs used by Judy Garland during the making of the film. Only four pairs of these iconic shoes remain.
