Famous American singer and actress Selena Gomez recently found herself in controversy, resulting in a significant drop in her Instagram followers. Reports indicate that over 700,000 people unfollowed her in the past month. This backlash came after Gomez shared an emotional video criticizing former U.S. President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
In the video, Gomez appeared in tears, condemning harsh actions against undocumented immigrants. This reaction followed a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation that led to the arrest of 956 individuals.
According to social media analytics platform Social Blade, Gomez’s Instagram followers decreased by approximately 715,000 over the last 30 days. While fluctuations in celebrity follower counts are common, this sharp decline raised many questions.
In her video, Gomez stated, “It deeply saddens me to see all of this. My people are being targeted, innocent children are affected. I want to do something, but I don’t know how. I promise I’ll try my best.” She ended the video with a Mexican flag emoji but later deleted it. Responding to the criticism, she remarked, “It seems expressing empathy is no longer considered acceptable.”
