Sania Mirza open up about patience, relationships, money and fame

Former Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has opened up about life, motherhood, and resilience in her first interview since her split from former Pakistan cricket team captain Shoaib Malik.

Sania Mirza’s interview comes after her split from Pakistani cricket star Shoaib Malik, whom she married in April 2010. Confirming his second marriage to actress Sana Javed in January 2024, Malik’s new relationship took a major turn after breaking up with Mirza.

Speaking to the British Broadcasting Corporation (Hindi), he said that patience, understanding, and support from loved ones are important in difficult times. She also emphasized the importance of patience in learning through experience, especially after becoming a mother

Mirza acknowledged the challenges of public life and said, “Everybody in the world doesn’t like you…you learn to deal with it.” “I used to be very emotional, but I think before I react,” she says, revealing a new focus on emotional control. While criticism on social media is inevitable, he says he won’t take it as a personal attack.

“Patience comes with age, but there is no other way, especially if you are a mother. I’m happy for a change.”

Reflecting on the last decade, he identified a shift in decision-making and attributed it to a new sense of thought and emotional maturity.

Emphasizing the importance of honesty and true friendship over material wealth and fame, Mirza said it is important to be relevant in reality.

Apart from financial success, Mirza said strong relationships are important. “Money and name are not everything,” he said. “Whoever stands by you in difficult times is the most important thing. There should always be someone who tells the truth. Money and fame are valuable, but they are not.”

Drawing a parallel between sports and life, Mirza offered a message of patience. “There are good times and bad times,” he said. “In sports, you bounce back after losing. It’s the same in life. Bad days don’t last. You try to improve and move forward.”
