Pakistani actress Sanam Saeed has expressed her satisfaction with the feedback she has received for her web series Barzakh, saying the response was in line with her expectations despite the recent controversy surrounding the show in Pakistan.
Some viewers of the show did not understand at first, but if they watch it carefully, they will understand. The audience’s response was exactly what we expected,” she said.
Saeed also addressed her Indian fans, describing them as “long-lost siblings” because of their shared cultural heritage.
We basically come from the same country, but we’ve evolved differently over the years. It’s heartening to reconnect with long-lost siblings,” she noted.
Directed by Asim Abbasi of Churails and Cake fame, the show created considerable debate due to its bold themes and content.
Since its debut two weeks ago, Barzakh has gained attention for its portrayal of controversial themes, including non-heteronormative storylines.
The decision was made “in light of current public sentiment,” according to a statement on Zindagi’s Instagram.
Fans in Pakistan have until August 9 to catch the final episode which is scheduled to air on August 6.
The show polarized viewers, with some praising its story and performances, while others criticized it for lacking “family” content.
Abbasi defended his creative decision, stating, “With all due respect, if you find queer/non-heteronormative stories ‘disgusting,’ please don’t watch my content. I will always stand up for everyone’s rights and tell the stories we believe in. .”
The controversy led to a boycott campaign by some Pakistani fans who claim the series violates Islamic principles.
Critics have targeted the director and stars, including Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed, for participating in a project they say promotes obscenity.
