ISLAMABAD: A roundtable discussion on Russia–Pakistan bilateral relations was held in Islamabad, bringing together academics and researchers from across Pakistan to examine the current state of political, economic, and cultural ties between the two countries.
The event, titled “Russia-Pakistan: Overview of the Modern Stage of Bilateral Relations,” was hosted by the Embassy of Russia in collaboration with the Consortium for Asia Pacific and Eurasian Studies (CAPES). More than 40 participants from universities and research institutions in Islamabad, Peshawar, Lahore, Faisalabad, Karachi, Sargodha, and Okara attended the discussion.
Russia–Pakistan bilateral relations and political engagement
In his opening remarks, Russian Ambassador to Pakistan Albert P. Khorev said that political dialogue between Russia and Pakistan has expanded in recent years, alongside increased engagement between the legislative bodies of the two countries.
He also referred to ongoing cultural exchanges and interactions between religious organizations, noting shared views on traditional and moral values among the societies of both countries.
Moscow signals readiness for regional cooperation
Ambassador Khorev stated that Russia remains prepared to pursue joint initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperation with Pakistan within the broader Eurasian region. He said such efforts could support deeper engagement in multiple sectors.
Trade trends and industrial exhibition highlighted
Russian Trade Representative in Islamabad Denis Nevzorov briefed participants on trends in bilateral trade and economic cooperation during 2025. He also informed the audience about the upcoming INNOPROM International Industrial Exhibition, scheduled to take place in Yekaterinburg, Russia, from July 6 to 9, 2026.
Academic and people-to-people exchanges discussed
Participants also discussed proposals aimed at expanding people-to-people contacts between the two countries. These included restoring direct air links, initiating joint academic programs between Russian and Pakistani universities, and translating Russian literary works into Urdu.
Academic interest in expanding engagement with Russia
The discussion reflected continued interest among Pakistan’s academic and research communities in expanding dialogue with Russia. Participants highlighted opportunities to strengthen cooperation in economic, educational, cultural, and humanitarian fields through sustained institutional engagement.
