Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma’s wife Ritika Sajdeh expressed her support for the besieged Gazans.
On Tuesday, Ritika took to Instagram and shared the caption “All eyes on Rafah” on her story, joining the global chorus highlighting the dire situation in the Rafah area of Gaza.
The speech gained traction on social media as a sign of support for Palestinians who are suffering severe hardships due to Israeli airstrikes.
Ritika’s writing is compared to many others that have drawn attention to the plight of more than 1.4 million Palestinians seeking protection from violence.
Despite Ritika’s laudable stance, she faced backlash from various sections of Indian social media users. These criticisms reflect conflicting views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in India and abroad.
The situation in Rafah has worsened after Israeli airstrikes targeted a UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) refugee camp, killing at least 45 people.
This escalation appears to have been ignored as airstrikes continued following the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling against Israel’s military action.
First responders in Rafah said at least 16 Palestinians were killed in the latest airstrikes on Tuesday. Once considered a haven in the conflict zone, south of Gaza City is now the scene of intense fighting, leading to mass displacement.
Almost 1 million people fled Rafah, displaced by the previous conflict between Israel and Hamas, and now live in camps in horrible conditions.
