Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah has announced that Rohit Sharma will continue to captain the Indian cricket team in the upcoming World Cup (WTC) 2023-25 and Champions Trophy 2025.
Expressing confidence in Sharma’s leadership, Shah cited his recent success in ending India’s 11-year ICC trophy drought by winning the World T20 against South Africa in Bridgetown.
Rohit Sharma, who took over as captain in 2021 following the resignation of Virat Kohli, led India to notable successes, including reaching the finals of the 2021-23 WTC and the 2023 ODI World Cup, though both ended in losses to Australia. Sharma’s tenure marked the revival of India’s competitive spirit on the international stage.
Shah’s announcement also highlighted Sharma’s exit from T20 Internationals (T20Is) along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja after a triumphant T20 World Cup campaign. The win was dedicated to the trio and former head coach Rahul Dravid, whose tenure ended with the T20 World Cup final.
In a video shared by BCCI, Shah praised the team’s performance and expressed optimism for the future. “I am confident that we will win the WTC final and the Champions Trophy under the leadership of Rohit Sharma,” he declared. Shah also reflected on India’s recent finals performances, admitting heartbreak but highlighting the team’s resilience and potential.
“Many congratulations to Team India for this historic win. I want to dedicate this victory to coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja. It was our third final in the last year. We lost in the final of the World Test Championship in June 2023 After ten wins in November 2023, we won the heart but failed to win the cup,” Shah added.
Shah also praised key players like Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya for their contributions in winning the T20 World Cup. Looking ahead, he expressed confidence in Sharma’s ability to lead India to further glory. “After this victory, the next stage is the WTC final and the Champions Trophy. I am confident that under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, we will become champions in both these tournaments.”
