Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is set to lead Delhi Capitals in the upcoming Indian Premier League season, marking his return to the cricket arena after a serious car accident in 2022, the club announced on Tuesday.
Club chairman and co-owner Parth Jindal expressed his confidence in Pant’s tenacious spirit and highlighted how toughness and fearlessness have always defined Pant’s cricketing style. Jindal expressed the team’s delight at welcoming him back as captain and looked forward to his leadership on the field once again.
“I look forward to the moment when he leads our team on the field and infuses them with a new wave of passion, energy and enthusiasm,” commented Jindal.
Pant met with an accident in December 2022 when his Mercedes SUV crashed into a guardrail north of New Delhi, resulting in multiple injuries. Despite the setback, Pant underwent rigorous rehabilitation to address the knee, wrist, ankle and back injuries sustained in the accident.
Having previously been replaced as captain by David Warner, Pant’s resurgence now sees him potentially representing India at the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled for June in the West Indies and the United States.
Team co-owner Kiran Kumar Grandhi acknowledged Pant’s dedication during this challenging phase and praised his tireless efforts in overcoming adversity.
As the IPL gears up for its latest edition starting on March 22, with defending champions Chennai Super Kings taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore in the opener, Delhi Capitals will take on Punjab Kings in their first match on March 23.
Renowned as the most lucrative cricket league in the world, the IPL continues to be a financial boon for both the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and its players.
