Islamabad: The Constitutional Bench has rejected the request of government employees to marry foreign nationals, both women and men, with a fine.
The six-member Constitutional Bench, headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan, heard the case. The petitioner, Mahmood Akhtar, appeared before the bench via video link.
Justice Jamal Mandokhail remarked that it is the prerogative of Parliament, so how can the court stop anyone?
Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar inquired if it is possible to prevent a government employee from marrying a foreign national. He asked if there is a law prohibiting such marriages, and if so, to present the law.
The petitioner requested more time, citing his serious illness. Justice Musarrat Hilali stated that how can a ban be imposed on marriage, and suggested that a fine should be imposed instead.
The Constitutional Bench rejected the petition with a fine of 20,000 rupees.
