Ecuadorian international footballer Marco Angulo has passed away at the age of 22, with his club confirming his death.
According to reports, Marco Angulo was severely injured in a car accident last month and had been receiving treatment in the hospital since October 7. The accident occurred in the southern part of Ecuador’s capital, Quito.
Media reports from Ecuador indicate that the footballer underwent several surgeries and spent over a week in the intensive care unit, where he passed away on Monday night.
His club, LDU Quito, issued a statement on Tuesday morning saying, “With deep sorrow and regret, we announce the passing of our beloved player, Marco Angulo. We extend our condolences to his family and loved ones. His death is an irreplaceable loss that will forever be etched in our hearts.”
Marco Angulo was a midfielder for MLS club FC Cincinnati and had joined LDU Quito on loan in March. He played 16 matches for the club, with his last match being on October 6, just a day before the accident.
