Tennis legend Rafael Nadal bid an emotional farewell to the 2024 French Open after losing to Alexander Zverev in the first round.
The 22-time Grand Slam winner, 14-time Roland Garros champion has battled to overcome injuries and fight back on Court Philippe Chatrier.
The 37-year-old Nadal, who underwent hip surgery last year, was visibly emotional in his post-match interview, suggesting this could be his last time at the French Open.
“It’s hard for me to talk…I’m not 100% sure that this will be the last time I see you,” she said, choking back tears.
The Spanish ace, who scored 90 points against Zverev’s 109, served 0-30 in what was likely his last game. Despite his efforts, Nadal could not overcome the strong game of his opponent.
“I had a chance, but it wasn’t enough against a good player,” he said.
Nadal, who won his first French Open title in 2005, has played just four tournaments since January last year due to injury.
When he left the court, Nadal received a standing ovation from the packed stadium, a testament to his lasting legacy in the world of tennis. Although he could not confirm whether this was his last farewell, Nadal’s words left a sense of uncertainty: “It is very bad that I will not return, but I cannot say 100%.
