SAHIWAL: The Punjab Water and Sanitation Authority (Punjab WASA), with technical support from AGAHE and Welthungerhilfe (WHH), has held a consultation workshop to begin developing a roadmap for financially sustainable, climate-resilient and citizen-centred WASH services in District WASA Sahiwal.
Senior officials from Punjab WASA and District WASAs of Sahiwal, Okara and Pakpattan participated in the consultation. They reviewed existing performance, discussed key challenges and identified opportunities to improve water, sanitation and hygiene services.
The discussions covered service delivery, infrastructure management, revenue generation, financial sustainability, governance, human resource development and institutional strengthening. Consumer engagement was also identified as an important area for improving public services.
The consultation helped develop a shared vision and consensus on strategic actions to improve the performance, efficiency and financial sustainability of District WASA Sahiwal.
Climate resilience was also placed among the key priorities as water and sanitation systems face increasing pressure from extreme weather, water shortages, flooding and other climate-related risks.
As a pilot initiative, the lessons and best practices emerging from the Sahiwal process are expected to help guide the strengthening and transformation of District WASAs across Punjab.
The initiative aims to support more sustainable, resilient and citizen-focused WASH services while strengthening the ability of local institutions to manage water and sanitation challenges over the long term.
