ISLAMABAD: The Punjab Forest Department, in partnership with Faisal Town Group, has launched a plantation campaign in the Margalla Hills region, announcing a target of planting 500,000 saplings in 2026 to restore forest areas impacted by environmental degradation and stone crushing activities.

The initiative, held at Faisal Hills on February 14, is part of the provincial government’s broader “Green Punjab” framework and the “Plant for Pakistan” program. Officials said the campaign is intended to strengthen forest cover, reduce pollution levels and support climate resilience in the Islamabad–Rawalpindi region.

Plantation activities began during the spring season, which forestry officials say offers favorable conditions for sapling growth. Environmental specialists associated with the campaign highlighted the need for sustained afforestation efforts to address smog, habitat loss and the long-term effects of climate change.

The launch ceremony drew participation from public and private sector representatives, students and local residents. The event formally commenced with a symbolic release of green balloons, followed by the planting of hundreds of saplings at the site.

Members of the National Assembly Asiya Tanoli and Mohsin Ayub Khan attended the event and noted the importance of large-scale plantation drives in tackling environmental challenges. They said expanding forest cover remains a key step toward ecological stability and cleaner air for future generations.

Chief Conservator of Forests Iftikhar-ul-Hassan Farooqi told reporters that rehabilitation of the Margalla Hills ecosystem is a priority under the ongoing environmental strategy. He said restoring degraded forest areas is essential to mitigate climate impacts and preserve biodiversity in the region.

Representatives of Faisal Town Group said the company’s Vision 2040 plan includes integrating environmental sustainability into urban development at Faisal Hills.

At the close of the ceremony, participants planted additional saplings and committed to monitoring and maintaining the newly planted trees to ensure long-term survival.
