ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) uncontestedly elected Barrister Gohar Ali Khan as its new chairman during Thursday’s internal party elections. Dr Yasmin Rashid was also elected unopposed as the party president for Punjab.
On 22 February, the PTI announced its schedule for internal party elections, and party members submitted nomination papers on 23 and 24 February.
Barrister Gohar was directly elected as PTI Chairman in December 2023 while party founder Imran Khan faced various legal battles. He previously worked for the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) before joining the PTI. He became a key member of Imran Khan’s legal team before becoming party president.
Similarly, Omar Ayub also won as General Secretary of PTI uncontested. He previously served as a minister under Prime Minister Imran Khan, focusing on the economy and energy.
Ali Amin Gandapur was uncontested as the president of the party’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region.
In a post shared on social media platform X by the party’s official account, he submitted his nomination papers for the post of KP Chief Minister.
PTI’s KP CM candidate Ali Amin Khan Gandapur has submitted his nomination forms.
Meanwhile, Haleem Adil Sheikh was also elected PTI president for Sindh unopposed.
The results of the new leadership will be officially announced on Sunday in Quetta, after the Balochistan presidential election is held.
The PTI held internal party elections in December 2023 after its founder Imran Khan stepped down from the party leadership following lengthy legal battles. However, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) declared the election invalid.
Earlier, the Supreme Court (SC) upheld the ECP’s decision last month, which caused the party to lose its election symbol just before the general elections.
