Islamabad: Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), the country’s leading broadband service provider, is pleased to announce the successful completion of the country’s first 50G-PON trial, paving the way for the introduction of next-generation fiber-optic broadband services in Pakistan. This ground-breaking achievement is the product of PTCL’s strategic collaboration with Huawei, a global leader in information and communication technologies.
50G-PON, defined by ITU-T as a next-generation Passive Optical Network-based broadband technology, has the potential to alter Pakistan’s digital environment. 50G-PON outperforms traditional GPON and XG(S)-GPON technology, providing an astonishing 50 Gbps per PON port. The technology is expected to transform future industry, workplace, campus, and home environment requirements by unleashing the limitless potential for bandwidth-intensive, low-latency next-generation services. Key use cases include the growth of holographic technologies, XR-based metaverses in the home and office, smart manufacturing using 3D machine vision, remote surgery and medical clinics, high-performance gaming, and so on. One of the most amazing features of 50G-PON technology is its ability to coexist with both GPON and XG(S)-PON on the same physical and passive optical network. This will allow PTCL to offer much faster broadband speeds to its customers via an on-demand service upgrade request.
