NEW DELHI: Indian farmers on Saturday (Feb 24) held a candlelight vigil to protest against the federal government along the Punjab-Haryana border, vowing to continue their protests until their demands are met.
Farmers marched with candles to commemorate the death of young protester Shubhkaran Singh, who was reportedly killed during violent clashes between protesting farmers and security personnel.
The march with anti-government slogans was held on the borders of Shambhu and Khanauri in the neighboring state of the Indian capital.
The protesting farmers, who are mostly Sikhs and hail from the northern state of Punjab, are demanding higher prices for their crops. Earlier this month, they began marching in Delhi to press their demands for a legal guarantee of minimum crop prices, among other things.
However, police stopped the march about 200 km (125 mi) from the capital using water cannons and tear gas.
