ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and widespread destruction caused by a powerful earthquake in Colombia.
In a statement posted on his X account, the prime minister conveyed heartfelt condolences to Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella, the people of Colombia and the bereaved families who lost their loved ones.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured and all those affected by this tragedy. Pakistan stands in solidarity with the people of Colombia in this difficult hour,” the prime minister said.
According to media reports, a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia near the municipality of San José del Palmar in the Chocó department, causing extensive damage across several areas.
The disaster reportedly left at least 111 people dead, while dozens of others were injured. More than 60 buildings were also reported to have collapsed in several major cities.
Following the widespread devastation, Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella reportedly declared a national state of emergency to facilitate relief and response operations.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s solidarity with the people of Colombia and extended prayers for the recovery of those injured and the safety of communities affected by the earthquake.
