In a major development towards transforming Pakistan’s energy landscape, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened an important meeting where the discussion revolved around the solarization of agricultural tube wells and the fight against electricity theft.
He highlighted the economic benefits and viability of solar energy, stating that it is currently the cheapest source of electricity.
The Prime Minister also directed to work with the provincial governments to expand solar initiatives in the provinces of Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with a special focus on benefitting farmers.
He emphasized the need for comprehensive strategies to ensure effective implementation against power grabs while thanking the provincial governments for their support.
Responding to concerns about billing accuracy, Sharif stressed that overcharging in electricity bills would not be tolerated. It mandated each distribution company to develop a smart metering model aimed at greater transparency and efficiency in monitoring electricity consumption.
In related briefings, it was highlighted that solarization of agricultural tube wells could potentially save Pakistan $2.7 billion in foreign exchange. Additionally, the ongoing campaign against electricity theft has resulted in significant actions, including the arrest of 84,366 persons and the registration of 174,562 FIRs nationwide.
Prime Minister Shehbaz’s proactive stance and strategic directives underscore Pakistan’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and combating electricity theft, paving the way for increased agricultural productivity and economic stability nationwide.
