MUZAFFARNAGAR, INDIA: A young man in India died after the mobile phone in his pocket reportedly exploded while he was riding a motorcycle, causing him to lose control and suffer severe injuries.
The incident took place near Wahlna Chowk in Rehmatpur village, around 25 kilometres from the Muzaffarnagar district headquarters, according to Indian media reports.
The victim, identified as Vikas, worked as a token operator at Uttam Sugar Mill. He was reportedly returning home on his motorcycle when the phone in his shirt pocket suddenly exploded with a loud blast.
The explosion caused Vikas to lose his balance and fall onto the road. He suffered serious injuries to his head, chest, hands and other parts of his body.
Police arrived at the scene after being alerted and, with the help of local residents, rushed him to a hospital. Due to the seriousness of his condition, doctors advised that he be transferred to another medical facility.
Vikas remained under treatment but died on Tuesday evening.
His father, Ravinder, said Vikas was his only son and was married. He leaves behind a six-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the potential dangers associated with damaged, overheating or malfunctioning mobile-phone batteries, although the exact cause of the explosion has not yet been established.
