Sri Lanka staged a remarkable comeback against Bangladesh, led by opener Pathum Nissanka, who orchestrated a masterful innings of 114 runs off just 113 balls in Chattogram on Friday.
Despite a shaky start as Sri Lanka found themselves at 43-3, Nissanka found a formidable ally in Charith Asalanka, who contributed a brilliant 91 to their fourth-wicket partnership.
Their 185-run partnership not only rescued Sri Lanka but also took them to a competitive total of 287-7 in the 48th over, with Waninda Hasaranga’s impressive bowling figures of 4-45 restricting the Bangladesh innings earlier.
Nissanka’s majestic innings came to an end after his sixth ODI century when Mehidy Hasan managed to force him caught by Liton Das at deep mid-wicket. Asalanka followed soon after as she slotted one past the keeper from a Taskin Ahmed delivery.
The lower order, led by Dunith Wellalag and Hasaranga, showed remarkable composure, adding 34 crucial runs for the seventh wicket and steering Sri Lanka closer to victory. Wellalage’s decisive knock, which bounced off Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, sealed victory with 3.5 overs to spare.

Meanwhile, Hasaranga showcased his all-round brilliance, not only with the ball earlier but also making vital contributions in the batting department.
Despite a valiant effort by Bangladesh’s middle order, led by Towhid Hridoy’s unbeaten 96, they fell short, managing 286-7 in their allotted overs. Hridoy’s knock, punctuated by three fours and five sixes, provided the late fireworks but it was not enough to tip the balance in Bangladesh’s favour.
Reflecting on the match, Najmul Hossain Shanto praised Hridoy’s performance and emphasized the need for such an impressive innings. However, he regretted the missed opportunities, especially regarding his own dismissal, and acknowledged the need for better partnerships to ensure success in the upcoming matches.
With the series now level, all eyes turn to the decider in Chittagong, which promises to be another thrilling encounter between the two cricketing powerhouses before the much-anticipated Test series begins.
