Pakistan exploring use of AI to modernise agriculture

BEIJING, Mar 12: Pakistan is planning to introduce artificial intelligence in the agriculture sector as part of efforts to modernise farming and increase productivity, Pakistan’s Ambassador to China, Khalil Hashmi, said on Thursday.

Speaking in Beijing during discussions linked to China’s annual “Two Sessions” meetings, Hashmi said Pakistan and China are working on establishing a joint laboratory for smart and digital agriculture to strengthen technological cooperation between the two countries.

He said Pakistan intends to deploy AI tools to improve efficiency in crop production, livestock management, and the cultivation of fruits and vegetables. The technology could also help enhance cold chain logistics used to store and transport agricultural products.

According to the ambassador, cooperation between the two countries in agriculture extends beyond technology development to include education, research and development, and commercial partnerships.

Hashmi also referred to the Pakistan-China B2B Agriculture Investment Conference held in January 2026, which resulted in nearly 80 memorandums of understanding and agreements between companies from both countries valued at about $4.5 billion.

Officials say the growing collaboration between Pakistan and China in agricultural technology is expected to support innovation in farming practices and strengthen the country’s agricultural productivity.
