Pakistan, China expand livestock and agricultural research partnership under CPEC phase two

Islamabad: Pakistan and China have formalized new agreements to deepen cooperation in livestock breeding, veterinary sciences and agricultural technology under the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The understandings were reached following the 2026 China-Pakistan Agriculture Investment Conference, where representatives of Jinan Animal Husbandry Industry Craftsman College and Pakistani institutions finalized multiple cooperation documents, according to official sources.

The initiative reflects the evolving priorities of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which has shifted from large-scale infrastructure projects toward industrial collaboration, agriculture modernization and technology transfer.

Establishment of joint technology centre

A framework agreement on industrial and technological cooperation and talent development was signed with the Pakistan-China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The agreement includes plans to establish a China-Pakistan Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Industry Technology Cooperation Center.

The proposed centre will focus on research and development, technical training and standard-setting in Pakistan’s livestock sector, which remains a key component of the rural economy.

Separately, a memorandum of understanding was signed with GO DAIRY Private Limited to facilitate the transfer of sheep in vitro fertilization techniques and advanced dairy cow breeding technologies. The agreement also covers technical advisory support to improve productivity and address operational constraints.

Academic collaboration and research

Cooperation was also agreed with the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences to enhance curriculum development and establish a joint training base aimed at strengthening applied research and human resource development.

Experts from both sides identified key areas of collaboration, including sheep breeding, dairy herd improvement and applications related to Himalayan pink salt. Plans are under consideration to establish a joint laboratory to support localized research and technology adaptation.

CPEC, launched in 2015 under China’s Belt and Road Initiative, initially focused on highways, energy projects and port development. In its current phase, agriculture and innovation-led cooperation are emerging as priority sectors in bilateral engagement.

Officials say the latest agreements are intended to strengthen livestock productivity, promote technology adoption and enhance skills development within Pakistan’s agricultural sector.
