More than 20 digital news outlets in India have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the artificial intelligence company of using copyrighted material without permission. According to the 135-page lawsuit, OpenAI’s actions pose a significant threat to the valuable copyrights of digital news publishers, including the Digital News Publishers Association and other outlets. OpenAI has formed partnerships with media organizations in other countries but has not made such agreements with Indian news organizations.
The lawsuit includes digital news groups associated with Indian billionaires like Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani, as well as prominent outlets like Indian Express and Hindustan Times. Indian news agency ANI was the first to file a lawsuit against OpenAI last year. OpenAI argues that the case should not fall under the jurisdiction of Indian courts, as the company operates internationally. The company also maintains that online public content is used for training AI models.
In other countries, similar lawsuits have been filed by news agencies, authors, and musicians accusing OpenAI of using their copyrighted work without permission.
