ISLAMABAD: Three days before the 2024 general elections, the caretaker government has taken a major step by announcing plans to provide gas connections to housing societies that have been without gas supply for several years.
Sources reveal that the caretaker government aims to reopen closed gas connections to domestic consumers, with an initial focus on more than 100 housing societies across the country. The authorities concerned have reportedly completed the necessary documents.
Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar is expected to officially announce the initiative at an upcoming ceremony likely to be held in Islamabad. Preparations for the event are said to be underway.

Under the proposed plan, it will supply LNG to these housing societies at a fixed rate of Rs 3600 per MMBTU, in contrast to the maximum gas rate of 4000 MMBTU charged to regular domestic consumers.
In particular, the government mixes gas and RLNG for domestic consumers due to gas shortages, resulting in a noticeable increase in gas prices.
The decision is said to be made in accordance with SIFC guidelines, with the Ministry of Petroleum and Sui Northern Gas Company being informed of the proposed plan, according to insiders.
