A new virus, Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), has raised concerns globally following reports and videos circulating on social media. Hospitals in China are seeing a rapid increase in patients suffering from HMPV, along with influenza A, pneumonia, and COVID-19. The Chinese health system has been placed on high alert as multiple viruses spread.
Recently, India confirmed three HMPV cases in infants, with no recent travel history or symptoms in the children. Medical experts warn that HMPV can cause severe respiratory issues, particularly affecting children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. This virus is spreading quickly among children and the elderly, and it is transmitted through respiratory droplets and direct contact.
Experts suggest not to panic as respiratory infections are common in winter. Precautionary measures include regular hand washing, using masks for those with cold or cough symptoms, and seeking medical advice when necessary. There is currently no antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV, and treatment is provided based on symptoms.
Preventive Measures:
- Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth without washing hands.
- Wash hands with soap for at least 20 seconds.
- Use masks for individuals with cold or cough.
- Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing.
- Infected individuals should avoid going outside.
