MULTAN: Muslim Hands Pakistan has expanded access to safe drinking water for communities in South Punjab through a community-based water initiative that is benefiting thousands of people across three districts.
Under the PKCW007 CA Project, the Muslim Hands Multan team has handed over 17 of 20 community wells, bringing clean drinking water closer to approximately 700 households and 5,826 community members.
The initiative goes beyond the construction of water facilities by focusing on community ownership and the long-term sustainability of local water resources.
Community members participated in health and hygiene awareness sessions as well as Operation and Maintenance (O&M) training, equipping them with knowledge and practical skills to maintain the wells and manage their water resources effectively.
The project also incorporates environmental resilience and household food security measures. Fruit trees have been planted and kitchen gardening introduced, helping communities increase green cover while providing opportunities for households to grow food locally.
According to Muslim Hands, the integrated approach aims to address multiple community needs by combining access to clean water with health awareness, environmental improvement and greater community capacity.
The provision of reliable drinking water can help reduce the challenges associated with unsafe water while supporting healthier living conditions, particularly in underserved communities.
By involving local residents in the management and maintenance of water facilities, the initiative also seeks to strengthen community ownership and ensure that the benefits of the project continue beyond the initial intervention.
The project contributes directly to Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6): Clean Water and Sanitation, while its tree plantation and kitchen gardening components also support broader goals related to environmental sustainability, food security and community resilience.
The initiative demonstrates how community-led water projects can combine basic service delivery with environmental action and local capacity building, helping create healthier and more sustainable communities in South Punjab.
