MOHMAND: The Wildlife Department has intensified action against illegal hunting and poaching in Mohmand as the seasonal migration of falcons begins.
On the directions of DFO Wildlife Mohmand Tariq Wazir, a joint raiding team comprising the Range Officer Prang Ghar, Deputy Rangers from Upper and Lower Mohmand and wildlife watchers conducted a targeted operation in Lower Mohmand.
The team checked hunters and trappers at different locations and took action against illegal hunting and trapping practices. Special attention was given to potential falcon trapping points and routes because the falcon migration season runs from September to November.
Wildlife officials strictly warned against the use of nets, traps and other illegal methods to catch falcons, including Shaheen falcons.
The local community was informed that hunting of small birds and the trapping and trade of falcons are prohibited under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Wildlife and Biodiversity Act, 2015. Officials also informed residents that such offences are non-bailable under the applicable law.
The wildlife team said falcons are valuable migratory birds and their illegal trapping can cause serious losses to biodiversity and natural ecosystems.
The department has increased patrolling and monitoring in the area during the migration season. Wildlife officials said similar raids and surveillance operations would continue in both Upper and Lower Mohmand to prevent illegal hunting and protect migratory birds.
