Three minors were injured when a child opened fire at an elementary school in Vantaa, outside the Finnish capital Helsinki, on Tuesday, police said, who also said the attacker was in custody.
“All those who participated in the shooting are minors. According to current information from the police, there are three injuries,” the police said in a statement.
Authorities said they were called to the scene of a Viertola school shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday a gunman had opened fire and advised residents to stay inside. Police later said both the alleged shooter and the injured were all minors.
They also announced the arrest of a suspect.
The school employs 90 people and has 800 students according to Finnish reports, with children between the ages of seven and 15 attending the school. Witnesses informed public broadcaster YLE that two ambulances left the scene.
Police urged the public to stay out of the area and stay indoors. “Do not open the door to strangers,” they said in a statement.
